As a mom to 4 boys, my day is non-stop. From the moment I get up until the boys go to bed I am constantly moving. At the end of the day you would think a good night’s sleep would come easily, however if I’m not mindful of my sleep habits I won’t get a good night’s sleep. And when Mama doesn’t get enough sleep, she gets cranky, and it affects everyone.

My boys are great sleepers; I swear they could sleep through a marching band parading through our home at night. However, this wasn’t always the case. When my boys were younger, I spent a lot of time researching ways to help them sleep better. Working hard to create better sleep habits for my boys made me realize I need to be more mindful of my sleep habits. I started to implement some of the things that worked for my boys into my nightly routine, and on nights I follow my routine, I sleep like a kid.

Here are my 5 Tips to Sleep Like a Kid

1. Create a Peaceful Sleeping Space

I sleep much better in a clean and clutter-free space. Now, that doesn’t mean my room is always spotless, but it means I always tidy up a bit before bed. A clear space helps me to have a clear mind which makes it so much easier to fall asleep. It’s nice to wake up to a clean slate each morning.

2. Remove Screens from the Bedroom

This is a big one for us. Our bedrooms don’t have a computer, TV or other screens. Bedrooms are for sleeping. (We keep our phones by our beds in case of emergency, but we off notifications while we sleep.)

3. Set a Regular Bedtime

When I give myself a set bedtime, it helps my brain to know when to wind down. As bedtime approaches and I start my nightly routine, my body starts to relax, and all that much easier for me to fall asleep.

4. Wind Down

I need 30 minutes to wind down at the end of the day. I can’t do hard mental or physical work right before bed, my brain will be racing while laying in bed trying to sleep. I have to set aside time to decompress before climbing into bed. I’ll do yoga, prayer, meditation, a bath, reading, or some relaxing activity to slow my mind and my body.

5. Sleep on a Comfortable Bed and Mattress

A comfortable bed can make a world of difference in getting a good night’s sleep. Everyone has their preferences for how they like to sleep, so finding what works for you might take a little research or trial and error. A comfortable mattress, pillow, and bedding are all key to getting a good night’s rest.

At the end of a long day, I love climbing into my bed, knowing I will sleep well. By following a simple nighttime routine, I know that my kids will sleep well, and I will sleep like a kid.
