Next year Abel will be starting preschool, he already knows his colors, shapes, numbers and letters thanks to big brothers and some great apps that have covertly taught him so much while he was “having fun”. We limit screen time during the week for our boys but when I do give Abel his tablet I like that he can play educational games that are preparing him for preschool and then on to kindergarten.
My 3 older boys have all played (and continue to play) these great educational apps that helped prepare them for school.
Endless Alphabet
Set the stage for reading success with this delightfully interactive educational app. Kids will have a blast learning their ABC’s and building vocabulary with the adorable monsters in Endless Alphabet. Each word features an interactive puzzle with talking letters and a short animation illustrating the definition. Before you know it, your child will be using words like gargantuan and cooperate! Download on iTunes or Amazon.
PBS Kids Games
The PBS KIDS Games app has over 90 free learning games with your favorite PBS KIDS characters. Kids can play anytime, anywhere! Games designed for children ages 2-8 that encourage learning science, math, creativity, and more. Download on iTunes or Amazon.
ABCMouse
Several years ago we joined ABCMouse when my oldest was 5 (he’s 10 now) and it has been a constant source of fun and education for my boys. All 4 of my boys have loved ABCMouse, and my youngest regularly plays. I love that the lessons are age specific and include reading and language arts, math, science, social studies, and arts. You can see our first review of ABCMouse here. ABCMouse is a subscriptions service but one of the few I wholeheartedly endorse.

All of these apps are great at preparing children for preschool, kindergarten and beyond. I’ve found that all of my boys have a solid understand of math and reading thanks to the fun games and activities provided in these apps. Even though these apps are a fun and effective way to help prepare your child for school nothing beats sitting down with your child every day and reading. As much as we love these apps we also love to read together as a family. You can check out some of our favorite books here.
My 3 year old daughter LOVES all things alphabet so I bet Endless Alphabet would be right up her alley! I’m surprised I’d never heard of it!
