Recently I wrote about the Best Kids Tablets and noticeably didn’t include the iPad. Several parents said that they prefer the iPad as a tablet for their child and wondered why I didn’t include the iPad in my list. Here’s why…
I love iPads and think they can be great for kids. We have 2 iPad minis that are used primarily by our kids but I have a few reasons as to why I didn’t include them in my previous post.
- They aren’t a tablet specifically designed for kids. All of the tablets I recommended were designed especially for kids. While iPads are great for kids they were designed for general use, not just for kids. Ultimately, this is the primary reason I didn’t include them.
- They aren’t as durable. Most tablets that are designed for kids are very durable. We’ve replaced our iPad mini screens multiple times because they just can’t withstand the abuse from children. However, if you do decide to use an iPad for a children’s tablet I highly recommend a durable case like the Speck iGuy or Avawo Kids Case.
- Up until recently the iPad didn’t offer parental monitoring features like most kid tablets. One of the key features of kid tablets is they have user friendly parental controls which makes it easy to monitoring usage and limiting screen time.
So that’s why I didn’t include the iPad in my Best Kids Tablet list. However, I do think the iPad is an excellent tablet and offers quality educational apps for kids. My kids have used an iPad for years and we love all of the high quality apps available. An iPad as a tablet for kids can be pretty pricey. If you decide to invest in a iPad for your child make sure you buy a good case and warranty.
