Yesterday Jude and I had a fun geometry lesson with toothpicks and marshmallows. Not only was it a simple and inexpensive project it tasted good too.
I started off by creating a square with the marshmallows and toothpicks then asking Jude to recreate the design. I didn’t assist him with building I just gave him the tools and assignment. It was a lot of fun to watch as he problem solve to figure out how to put together his square.
Then we tried a different shapes like triangles, hexagons, and octagons.
We then worked into the 3 dimensional shapes.
Finally we built free style shapes.
Jude wanted to build a tower so we worked together trying different techniques to see what would make our structures stronger. After we’d adjust our design Jude would proclaim, “Now it’s really strong!”
This project cost about $3 total and gave us about an hour of learning/building time. We will certainly be doing this project again.
