NC Zoo Review + Giveaway #iheartnc

On Saturday we set off to visit the NC Zoo in Asheboro, which is about an hour and half drive west of Raleigh. I was super excited because it my the first time to the zoo since I was a child and of course it was the first trip the zoo for Jude.
I won’t give you a play-by-play of our day but I will let you know we managed to see every exhibit on the grounds. We entered through the North American gate and then took the tram to Africa and worked our way back. Jude loved riding the tram. Because of the heat some of the animals weren’t as sociable and spent time relaxing in the shade, which I totally understand… it was hot. But we did have a few great views with the Zebras, Giraffes and Elephants. One thing I particularly like about the NC Zoo is the large open spaces for the animals to roam. While it makes it more challenging to sometimes see the animals it also gives them space to just be animals.
We enjoyed seeing all the animals but we each had our favorites. Joe thought the cacomistles were very cool, probably because they are nocturnal. I really loved the Giraffes because they can’t really hide. And Jude loved anything that lived in or around water, but especially turtles.
Jude did great despite not taking a nap, of course he was out for the whole ride home. We brought along a lot of water and snacks, both of which came in very handy. We ate lunch at Junction Springs and took our time enjoying all the wonderful shaded seating areas along the paths. 
All-in-all it was a wonderful trip. We had a full day visiting all the beautiful animals at the NC Zoo. I highly recommend visiting the NC Zoo, preferably in the spring or fall when it’s not so hot.
About the NC Zoo
Located just south of Asheboro, the North Carolina Zoo is seated on a 1,500-acre tract of land in the Uwharrie Mountains.  Approximately 500 acres of this property have been developed into one of the largest “natural habitat” zoos in the United States.  You won’t find cages made of steel and concrete.  The animals are given enclosures that mimic their natural habitats to include trees, ponds, rocks, grass and dirt.


The North Carolina Zoo grew from an idea initiated by the Raleigh Jaycees in 1967. The first exhibits opened in 1974 as a temporary facility while the permanent Zoo was being built.  The first permanent exhibit was the “Forest Edge”, home to Zebra, Ostrich and Giraffe.  This opened in 1979, and exists today much as it did in the late 1970’s.
