5 tips for a healthy spring Our family recently endured a week long battle with the stomach bug. Everyone fell victim to this nasty virus and as spring approaches I’m working to mend our sick family and prepare for a healthy spring. I’ve been taking a natural probiotic the help rebuild the good bacteria in my body as I recover from this stomach bug. Cold and flu season may be leaving but allergy season is just around the corner and I want to make sure my family is healthy so we can enjoy the gorgeous spring weather.

Prevention is the best course of action against sickness. I am going to be proactive and take charge of my health to hopefully prevent any sneaky spring colds that try to slip in our house.

I’m not a doctor or nutritionist or fitness instructor but I know from experience that these 5 Tips will help prepare you for a healthy spring… a healthy life.

1. Exercise – Get outside and enjoy the warming spring air. Even if you just take a short walk around the block your body with thank you.

2. Eat more Fruits and Vegetables – I love the bounty of fresh fruits and vegetables that come with spring. Take advantage of in-season produce and increase your consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables.

3. Drink Water – Drink more water. I know sometimes drinking water can get boring so try adding some fresh fruits and vegetables to your water. I like to create a “detox water” which tastes great and helps flush toxins from your body.

  • 1 orange cut into slices
  • 1 lemon cut into slices
  • A few sprigs of mint
  • Place in the bottom of a pitcher and fill with water.

Drink a glass of detox water before meals or whenever you’re thirsty!

4. Relax – Life can get stressful and stress can set off all sorts of health problems. Set aside some time to relax. Do yoga, read a book, or sit outside and enjoy the sunshine.

5. Add a Probiotic like Insync Probiotic

insyncpill About a week ago I took the two little boys with me to Costco to purchase Insync Natural Probiotics. Noah helped me find the display right on the end of row in the health and beauty section. I love shopping at Costco because they have so many great natural products and they have huge shopping carts that fit my 1 and 2 year old boys.

insync-box I started taking Insync right away and within just a few days I started to feel the difference. I stomach wasn’t as queasy as it had been just a few days after the stomach bug and I began to regain the energy levels needed to keep up with my three busy boys.

insync-hand Insync Probiotic is a dietary supplement that is formulated to help support gastrointestinal health. As I get older I’ve found that my body doesn’t bounce back from sickness quiet as easily as it used to so I use supplements like Insync to assist my body in a full recovery. In conjunction with a healthy diet, lifestyle and exercise; supplements can give my body that little boost it needs to perform optimally.

I was raised on diet soda. When I was a baby my grandmother would put diet soda in my bottle. So to say that our family was addicted to soda was an understatement, we adored it. Then, I gave up drinking soda when I was in college, not for health reasons but because I was a broke college student that couldn’t afford soda. As a result I lost my taste for soda and actually crave water. However, drinking water all the time can get a little boring so I like to add flavor by drinking iced tea. Living in North Carolina it’s tradition to drink sweet iced tea, like all the time. So traditional sweet iced tea is pretty easy to come by but isn’t really all that healthy (think several cups of sugar!).

When I met my husband, Joe he was working as a barista. Joe introduced me to all sorts of hip tea drinks, like Thai Iced Tea, Green Tea Latte, Chai Latte, flavored ice tea and many others. He is no longer a barista but we still like to experiment with drink ideas and a few weeks ago I got this crazy idea to add carbonated water to a flavored iced tea. So we tested a few ideas and came up with a delicious Sparkling Blueberry Green Tea.

Slingshot Coffee and Nutella Smoothie

Slingshot Cold Brew Coffee and Nutella Smoothie by Joe

A while ago our friend Jenn started a company called Slingshot Coffee, which makes really smooth cold-brew coffee.  During a holiday-schedule-induced caffeine headache I found myself in a long line at the Whole Foods coffee counter with my family waiting outside in the car, feeling frustrated and irritable as the withdrawal/crowded places combo will often bring out in me.  I just happened to glance over my shoulder, and there was a bottle of cold, fresh-brewed (I know because of the date) Slingshot Coffee staring me right in the eye.

So without giving it a second thought, I grabbed it and headed for the express lane.  A few minutes later, after I’ve shotgunned about a third of the bottle in the car and de-Hulk-ified into my pleasant, rational self again, I started thinking about what I was gonna do with the rest of the bottle…

Cold brew coffee is probably the smoothest coffee you’ll ever taste, and Slingshot is especially potent so I was hesitant to drink the whole bottle on the way to the in-laws’.  Because of it’s low acidity, cold brew coffee is especially good served cold, so I decided to put it in a smoothie.  I’ve wanted to make some Espresso/Nutella drinks for a while, but my machine has a clog or something and it’s not doing what it’s supposed to, so I decided to throw some of my lonely jar of Nutella in there as well.  Although I can’t come up with a name for it that doesn’t sound bad, I’m very pleased with the results.
