Cooking with Kids at Whisk

· · ·

The other night Jude and I attended a kid’s cooking class at Whisk, a new independent kitchenware store located in Cary, North Carolina. Whisk offers quality cookware and tools for everyone from the casual cook to the professional chef. They also offer in-store cooking classes that teach more than just new recipes. Their chefs teach you how to use special tools, skills, and techniques so you can create delicious dishes at home.

Jude and I took a Holiday Treat Kid’s Class where we made Brownie Santa Hats, Chocolate-Dipped Marshmallow “Hot Cocoa” Mugs, and Holiday Peppermint Bark.

The class was designed so the kids did all of the work and the parents were just guides that stood behind the kids and offered support when needed. I loved that Jude was given control of what he made, he enjoyed the hands-on learning. Jude and I already spend a lot of time in the kitchen together so I knew he would do pretty well in the class but I was completely surprised at how much he enjoyed it and took his time creating his masterpieces.

The instructor, Liz did a wonderful job giving attention and guidance to all of the children. She has 3 boys of her own so she is very comfortable working with children in the kitchen. Jude was the youngest kid in the class but he did amazingly well and was able to keep up with all of the older kids. He even got to dip his own marshmallows in the chocolate, of course, it was a little messier than usual but he loved it.

I think Jude’s favorite treat to create was the Chocolate-Dipped Marshmallow “Hot Cocoa” Mugs.

Ingredients:

  • Semi-Sweet Chocolate for melting
  • Large size Marshmallows
  • Mini-Candy Canes, Straight tips broken off a bit
  • Small Marshmallows, cut into bits
  • Sparkling sugar

Directions:

  1. Insert mini candy cane straight tips into the side of a large marshmallow to create a “mug”
  2. Holding the “mug” by its handle, carefully dip it into chocolate to cover the entire marshmallow
  3. While the chocolate is still wet, add small marshmallow bits to the top of “the mug and press to adhere
  4. Sprinkle top with sparkling sugar to give a frosty appearance
  5. Set aside to harden completely

Making all of our holiday treats were fun but eating them was the best part!
